S60.com riding off into the sunset come June

Filed under:

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust -- you know how it goes with the circle of life and all that jazz, even the best things must eventually come to an end. In this case, it's a bittersweet end that's leading to an exciting new beginning -- S60's home page, S60.com, is officially shuttering shortly, but only to make room for its Symbian Foundation equivalent. Registration for the current site and the S60 Ambassador program are already closed, and the rest of the site will be decommissioned by the end of June; it's not clear how all of S60.com's features will be replaced over at Symbian.org, but we have hope that they'll be largely replicated, especially considering the community-minded focus Symbian has applied so far in its wild journey into open source.

[Thanks, Alex J.]

MetroPCS working with ZTE on LTE-based smartphone

It's still pretty wild to think that scrappy lil' MetroPCS -- a carrier known better for ultra-cheap phones, regional coverage, and no contracts than it is for high-speed data -- intends to roll out its first LTE markets in the same year as Verizon, but hey, we definitely like their moxie. Of course, live LTE networks require LTE hardware, and it turns out that the company is hooking up with ZTE to make that happen. MetroPCS already enjoys a healthy relationship with the Chinese manufacturer, but the LTE tie-up should serve to strengthen the bond -- not to mention the fact that they're looking to move upmarket by introducing a smartphone with "a large screen and an HTML-compatible browser" according to Forbes. Sure, on paper, you might say that you'd rather have an HTC device, a Pre, or an iPhone -- but how's your willpower going to be treating you when MetroPCS is offering 50Mbps tethering?

BlackBerry Storm 9530 build 4.7.0.141 leaked, possibly on the way to Verizon release

Want a head start on the very firmware Verizon might be launching next month? If you're a Storm 9530 owner, of course you do -- and like clockwork, it's now been leaked for everyone to enjoy. The version you'll be looking for here is 4.7.0.141, which by our rough calculations is some 28 builds ahead of the 4.7.0.113 we'd previously heard would hit the carrier-branded devices in an official capacity. Hopefully the latest version rocks all the same features, enhancements, and fixes that 113 did, and a whole lot more; let us know how it goes for you if you pull the trigger ahead of Verizon's blessing, yeah?

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCIV: Nokla beats Nokia to the touchscreen N98 punch

Good ol' Nokla, with its punny branding and utter shameless, has taken upon itself to build the touchscreen N98, based on a sketchy Nokia concept that was making the rounds last year and never materialized. There's a 3-inch QVGA screen and dual-sim support, but things lean into the realm of Nokia parody with the complete lack of 3G or EDGE data. The worst part is that this phone actually looks kind of nice. All this unintentional humor can be yours for a mere $78.

Verizon calling BlackBerry 8230 Pearl Flip the “Apex”?

We've even mentioned it on the podcast -- RIM's naming convention is starting to get confusing, especially in the crowded 8000 range where you've got both an 8230 and an 8320 to worry about (and they're very different phones). TheStreet is claiming that RIM will introduce both the 9630 Tour and a flip phone -- the Apex -- at the company's WES conference next week; we have a very, very hard time believing that Verizon would launch multiple flip BlackBerrys in a short span of time, so that leads us to the logical deduction that the rumored 8230 Pearl Flip will come to be known as the Apex. Makes you wonder how Alltel, Bell, and Telus feel about that, doesn't it?
