The difference between polyphonic ringtones and monophonic ringtones is in the quality of sound. Polyphonic sounds have "layers" or can emit multiple sounds simultaneously.

When you press the keys on your phone the electrionic sound you hear is monophonic. When you play a music CD with several instruments playing that is more like polyphonic. This is just a rough example of the quality of sound you get comparatively between monophonic and polyphonic ringtones. Of course the quality of sound your get from your phone depends on the speaker(s) it has built in.

It's easy to remember: Mono=1 Poly=Many
